Keeping Childrenís Pain to a Minimum When Divorcing

Divorce can be traumatic for all concerned, but children can be affected adversely. Fortunately there are steps that you can take to hopefully help your kids to make sense of what is going on around them and limit the emotional damage that they may be caused. Steps that parents can take to soften the trauma of a divorce including arranging shared custody that benefits everyone and agreeing in regular patterns and routines. If a parenting style can be agreed on thereís a good chance that disruption can be kept to a minimum.

Listen to Your Kids

Many parents put off getting divorced even though things arenít working for the sake of the children. However, children can easily pick up on friction, so you may find yourself causing more harm than good by staying together even if you and your spouse are not happy. If you are only staying together for the children'sí sake, you may be forcing them to live in an unhappy environment that could actually be improved by separation.

Be Sensitive

One way or another, a divorce is going to have an effect on your children. As a life-changing event, divorce will mean your children having to adjust to living arrangement that might be completely alien to them, even if they concede that divorce is the best option. Sugar-coating the situation may be a bad move as it may give them false hope that you might get back together even if you have no intention of doing so. Itís therefore best to be clear with your kids about whatís happening without being overly brutal. By allowing your children to live with the hope that you will reconcile, you may only hurt them later. If there is a chance of reconciliation, itís best not to tell your children as their hopes may be dash and their emotional lives disrupted significantly. This could mean attending counselling sessions in secret or not informing them if you do decide to start dating each  other again to test the water.

Getting Legal Help

Itís wise to get family lawyers on the case as soon as possible if you are heading down the divorce route. They will be able to give you all the advice you need and will hopefully be able to keep divorce costs down too. It may be wise to shop around for divorce lawyers and come up with a shortlist before you choose one. It should be made clear from the outset that the main objective is to protect the children and their best interests.

Divorce law can be complicated so you should look for a professional that is fully up-to-date with legislation. The more common ground you can find with your ex-partner, the less time youíll spend in family law courts. Good divorce and family lawyers are not just here to sign the paper work and let you go. They are there to help you through this difficult time and help you cope in these difficult times. Itís always best to choose solicitors who are experienced in divorce and family law like Rix and Kay who are divorce solicitors from East Sussex, Brighton and Kent have years of experience in this and will be able to help you through this difficult time.

Donít Criticise

Itís also a good idea to avoid criticising your estranged spouse in front of the children, especially if they are particularly fond of them. You could be accused of forcing them to take sides and this could be used against you later. Take action if you feel that your divorce or separation is overtly hurting your children. Their performance at school may be affected, their behaviour may become a cause for concern and they may become depressed. Listening to them and paying attention to their needs is crucial during times like this.

And remember you are never alone; there is always someone who can help you, weather that be friends, family, co-workers of even solicitor. They will be able to support you through this difficult time , sometime all you need to do is ask for help.
